The Training
The Painting School at the Goetheanum has as the basis of
its curriculum Rudolf Steiner’s indications for a new art of painting:
the training motifs for painters and his colour theory.
After many years researching these indications the painter Gerard Wagner developed
a methodical path of training which is practised in the school. This path
aims to lead the student to a living experience of how “form comes out
of colour”.
In order to arrive at this experience a faculty needs to be developed which
strengthens the ability to perceive and feel colour. The school offers a
way of working which enables this faculty to grow.
Watercolour painting forms the main part of the training.
We favour plant-based pigments which have a particular light quality and are
therapeutic through their enlivening effect on the soul.
Other subjects given in short blocks or weekly are: drawing, Rudolf Steiner’s
lectures on colour, art and art history, the study of Anthroposophy.
Clay modelling is taught by teachers of the Goetheanum Sculpture School.
Throughout the three to four year training the teaching takes place in the
mornings. Students are expected to organise their own practice time in the
afternoon or at weekends.
It is possible to take a one year or a one term course geared to the needs
of the individual. Foundations can be laid for further practising and research.
When needed, painting instruction is given in English.
A Part-time training, Summer and weekend courses are available. See Courses/Part-Time
Training.
The school works in co-operation with the
Art Section and the Medical Section of the
School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum in Dornach.
The Goetheanum
The school is a short walk from the Goetheanum,
the home of the School of Spiritual Science and the centre of the Anthroposophical
Society Worldwide.
Students can attend the conferences, courses, lectures and study groups at
the Goetheanum.
